Clean out your closet for a cause this World Environment Day

This World Environment Day, Dress for Dignity is encouraging Australians to say YES to clothes and NO to landfill by joining Australia's Biggest Closet Cleanout between June 4 and June 5.

Participants can register to clean out their closet via a Facebook event and then upload their pre-loved fashion items to Dress for Dignity's website to be sold.

Not only will it be good for the planet, but all proceeds from the sale will go to Australian charity, Share the Dignity to continue their work supporting those experiencing period poverty, homelessness, and domestic violence.

Dress for Dignity is Australia's first 100% charitable fashion marketplace where people can upload and sell or purchase pre-loved, quality fashion items.

After hearing the Australian Government's report that Australia generates and sends approximately 800,000 tonnes of textiles waste to landfill each year, Dress for Dignity hoped to create a more sustainable circular fashion economy in Australia.  

Share the Dignity founder and managing director, Rochelle Courtenay hoped to see thousands of Australians make the pledge to clean out their closet this World Environment Day.

"The idea for Dress for Dignity sparked while cleaning out my own closet during COVID, I wanted to be sure the clothes didn't end up in landfill but also wanted a way to sustain the important work we do at Share the Dignity," Ms Courtenay said.

"So this World Environment Day I urge you join me in cleaning out your closet and uploading your pre-loved clothes so you're not letting good fashion go to waste.

"Not only is it good for the planet; it's a small act of kindness that will help change somebody's life through the work we do at Share the Dignity."

The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and The Environment released a communique at the National Clothing Textile Waste Roundtable in May 2021 found Australians created enough textile landfill waste to cover Tasmania annually.

"Australia is the second highest consumer of textiles per person in the world, after the United States of America," the report found.

"Each Australian consumes an average of 27 kilograms of new clothing per year and disposes an average 23 kilograms of clothing to landfill each year, or 93 per cent of the textile waste we generate."

Instead of contributing to the landfill waste, Dress for Dignity is encouraging Australians to make a powerful fashion statement this season by participating in Australia's Biggest Closet Cleanout.
